Neck and shoulder pain?

Question by ohboyshay: Neck and shoulder pain?
I was at the hospital 2 weeks ago and diagnosed with some sort of infection. No blood tests or anything done. I got an antibiotic. The headache and right side stomach pain cleared for the most part as did the lump on the roof of my mouth. But now my neck feels weak, swollen, and sore. I feel like I always have to lean on my arms of hold my head up. So uncomfortable. And my shoulders feel as though they are on fire. My antibiotic is done but I still feel crappy. Back to the docs after the holidays but what could this be? Thanks so much

Question by Tex: I saw a chiropractor for shoulder pain, Now I have neck/head pain?
I was bringing my newborn to the chiropractor for acid reflux. I read it was a safe treatment for that, and I had already done all the traditional treatments with no result. He has not improved, but I was ok with that. I just figured I try.
I mentioned I had been having shoulder pain so I asked if she could check it out. She did an adjustment. I have my next appointment today and I am thinking I should cancel. My shoulder feels worse and now I have a weird neck pain with turning. The pain travels up the back of my head and gives me a headache. Now after doing some research I read neck adjustment can give you a stroke! I know I am not having one but I have been really lightheaded for days. I am afraid to go back. She is the nicest doctor I have ever met so I don’t know how to handle this. Should I go and explain my concerns of just call and cancel. Please help!
just to be clear what she did with my son was not at all like what she did with me. She didn’t twist anything on him it almost looked more like a massage.

Answer by Graybeard
The thought of someone taking an infant to a chiropractor is frightening. Chiropractic is an imaginary and irrational explanation of health and illness. Please google the National Council Against Health Fraud and Victims of Chiropractic. You’re correct in that chiropractic “adjustments” can cause permanent injury, stroke, and death. Keep in mind that quacks are the friendliest people you will meet… and people do not have adjustable spines.

Get Rid of Neck Pain with an Orthopedic Pillow

Article by Dan Delaney

It’s quite common for people to wake up with a stiff and painful neck from time to time. But, if neck pain has become a daily companion, then it may be time for you to switch to a new pillow. That’s right: your neck problems are likely to be caused by the wrong pillow. In this case, choosing the right pillow is, of course, the best solution to your problem.

To determine whether your pillow is in need of replacement, ask yourself these questions: Do your pillows look stiff and flat? Do you need to pound your pillows into shape in order to get comfortable at night? Is your sleep interrupted during the night with the need to repeatedly “fluff” your pillow into shape? Do you wake up every morning with a stiff neck and shoulder pain? Do you constantly wake up with a slight headache? Is your pillow so old that you can’t even remember when and where you bought it?

If you answered YES to any of these questions, then your pillows is definitely in need of replacement! After all, the first step towards eliminating neck pain is providing adequate support to your shoulders and neck during sleep. That is also one of the most effective ways for you to get a good night’s sleep. Orthopedic pillows may be your best bet for this purpose.

When we say you need to replace your old pillow, we don’t just mean that you have to go to a department store and buy a brand-new standard pillow. That probably won’t solve your neck pain problems. For more lasting relief from shoulder and neck pain, you will need an orthopedic pillow. This pillow is especially designed to provide the necessary support for your shoulders and neck. You’ll also sleep better as a result. There is a wide variety of orthopedic pillows available in the market. You’ll have to be sure that the one you choose provides ample support to your neck, effectively cushions your head, and helps you maintain the right posture even in sleep.

The most popular type of orthopedic pillow is the one with raised and rounded edges. Its best feature is the special contour that conforms to the natural curve of your neck. This contour helps ensure that neck pain is alleviated and adequate support is provided. Orthopedic pillows are made from a variety of different materials, including memory foam, buckwheat hulls, water, and air. You may need to try orthopedic pillows made from different materials to find the one that suits you best.

Here’s an important tip: You may need some time adjusting to your new orthopedic pillow. That said, you may feel the need to switch to your old pillow for a few hours during the first few nights of using an orthopedic pillow. As soon as you get used to your orthopedic pillow and are able to finally get a more restful sleep with it, you can say goodbye to your old pillow for good. And while you’re at it, you can definitely say goodbye to neck pain as well.

Question by : Strained muscles causing neck discomfort/stiffness & headaches?
I recently strained some neck muscles by leaning over backwards with my neck tense for a good amount or time(unintentionally of course)anyways, the strained muscles are causing neck discomfort and stiffness(especially whenever I first wake up because I always wake up in an odd position with my neck bent which I’m sure dosent help)and it’s also causing quite painful headaches.I do not want to take any pain medication as it is just a tension induced headache and it probably won’t do much good.I also am against going to the doctor because there’s not much they can really do other than give you some pain medication which I would prefer not to have.anyways,in the meantime while my strained muscles are healing, can anyone please suggest some things that I cab do to help relieve the neck pain and headaches?

Best answer:

Answer by Douglas B
Your neck muscles are tight and causing the headaches, you are right on that. To get rid of the pains and discomfort you have to free up your neck muscles and here’s how to do that:
Neck
Put your hands alongside your head so your thumbs are on the front of the muscle under your ear and your fingers are on the back of the muscle behind your neck. Squeeze your thumb and fingers together and hold. Relax your body. When your fingers and thumb touch, about one minute, slowly lower your head as far as you can, release the pressure but hold your neck lowered for another 30 seconds.
For best results relax your body first by taking a deep breath and exhaling then remain this relaxed.
