What can I do to correct a severe neck pain?

Question by Rowan_godfire: What can I do to correct a severe neck pain?
Sometime yesterday between 8 and 9 AM, I did something to make a crick in my neck. Yesterday, it was merely irritating, miild sharp pain when I moved my neck. Today, it’s excruciating. I can’t even keep my head up properly and I can barely look down. There aren’t any emergency chiropractic clinics that are open today and within walkable distance. I can’t afford another hospital ER visit, since I’m already paying off one from when I got a bad virus two months ago. I don’t have a regular physician. I tried the local massage college, where students give supervised massages for $ 25, but I have seven dollars to my name at the moment and they weren’t able to bill me.

I’m sufficiently mobile thanks to ibuprofen, but the problem isn’t going away. It doesn’t seem to be a muscle cramp. Hot/cold packs aren’t helping one bit. I can’t breath normally because my lungs are putting pressure on the injury. And trying to lay down to sleep last night only appears to have made it worse.
As it turns out, an emergency physician confirmed it is a muscle cramp, though more severe than others I’ve had. Thanks for the responses.

It sounds like you herniated a disc. You stated some of the things that I endured when my disc went out: could not look up, could not look down, could not lay flat, my head tilted to the left, etc.

Make a make-shift neck collar; take a large towel, or some piece of material. Roll it up like a log and wrap it around your neck for comfort. Use ice or a bag of frozen peas to help reduce pain and swelling along with Ibuprofen.

There has to be at least 1 hospital in your area that cannot refuse you medical treatment because of your financial situation. These hospitals also work with the State to get emergency medical insurance and/or payment through Medicaid or Quest. You must prove you are a citizen, have no life insurance policy that you can cash in, and state your income.

It sounds like you need nearly emergency surgery if you are having trouble breathing – don’t mess around and cause more damage. Go to the hospital, get checked, and work with their financial officers. (Also make sure that the bill you are now paying on, you are not paying the full amount – they should and usually bill at a different rate for people with no insurance)

I was looking for a way to stop grinding my teeth in my sleep. I was grinding my teeth so hard that a perfectly good and relatively new crown came loose. I thought the problem was caused by my stiff neck and tight shoulders which is often the result of spending too much time at the keyboard.

Despite getting plenty of exercise, I’ve had trouble with my neck on and off for a long time. I walk every day. I swim. I ride my bicycle often. I do yoga. When I’m really desperate, I see the chiropractor, get a massage and some acupuncture.

On this occasion I decided I needed to get some sort of mouth guard for sleeping since my usual attempts to loosen and relax my neck were not working. I feared that sooner or later I was going to crack a tooth or loosen my crown again not to mention my jaws were killing me when I woke up in the morning.

So I started looking for a mouth guard. And what I discovered, quite my accident, was the Lip Trainer.

The Lip Trainer is not a mouth guard even though at first glance I thought it was. And the bizarre part of my story is that I bought the Lip Trainer because the man who sold it to me convinced me that it would help me get a good night’s sleep. He guaranteed that after just seven days, I would sleep through the night without waking up. We didn’t talk about my neck problem. We didn’t talk about the fact that at that very moment I had such a splitting headache from the tension in my neck that I could hardly think! And since English was not his first language, I don’t think he understood me when I said I was looking for a way to stop grinding my teeth.

Really, it was the allure of a good night’s sleep that convinced me to try it. Little did I know that all of my problems stemmed from the fact that I slept unknowingly with my mouth open!

The man showed me how to slip the Lip Trainer behind my lips and in front of my teeth and to squeeze the device closed with just my lips for three minutes; not clamping my teeth closed but rather relaxing the jaw and using only the lips.

Eighty dollars later, I took the Lip Trainer home and used it twice that afternoon and evening before going to bed. I didn’t sleep particularly well that night but when I woke in the morning I felt such a blessed relief in my neck that I couldn’t believe it. I should mention that up to that point I’d had neck pain and a headache almost every day for weeks. So the relief was staggering.

But on this the first morning after just two exercises with the Lip Trainer, my neck, my shoulders, my back were completely relaxed. And I could tell from the way my jaws felt that I did not grind my teeth that night.

When I finally sat down and read all the literature, it was right there in black and white that the Lip Trainer would cure a stiff neck instantly! And I can tell you that it did!

I’ve been using the Lip Trainer for six weeks now. I use it faithfully four times a day for three minutes. My neck continues to feel great despite long hours at my desk. I sleep ever so soundly right through the night breathing through my nose instead of my mouth and my sinuses have stopped draining!

The Lip Trainer was originally developed by a doctor in Japan to help a stroke patient rehabilitate. Since the year 2000 over 5000 clinics and hospitals in Japan have radically cured an unbelievable plethora of conditions with this simple device. Even Autistic and Down’s Syndrome children benefit from the use of the Lip Trainer.

I have no financial link or interest in the Lip Trainer. I am just a very very happy customer sharing my experience.

rest

Resting is important immediately after injury for two reasons. First, rest is vital to protect the injured muscle, tendon, ligament or other tissue from further injury. Second, your body needs to rest so it has the energy it needs to heal itself most effectively.

Ice:

Use ice bags, cold packs to provide cold to the injured area. Cold can provide short-term pain relief. It also limits swelling by reducing blood flow to the injured area. Keep in mind, though, that you should never leave ice on an injury for more than 15-20 minutes at a time. Longer exposure can damage your skin. The best rule is to apply cold compresses for 15 minutes And then leave them off for at least 20 minutes.

Compression:

Compression limits swelling, which slows down healing. Some people notice pain relief from compression as well. An easy way to compress the area of the injury is to wrap an ACE bandage over it. If you feel throbbing, or if the wrap just feels too tight, remove the bandage And re-wrap the area so the bandage is a little looser.

Elevation:

Elevating an injury reduces swelling. It’s most effective when the injured area is raised above the level of the heart. For example, if you injure an ankle, try lying on your bed with your foot propped on one or two pillows.

After a day or two of R.I.C.E., many sprains, strains or other injuries will begin to heal. But if your pain or swelling does not decrease after 48 hours, make an appointment to see your primary care physician or go to the emergency room, depending upon the severity of your symptoms.

Once the healing process has begun, very light massage may improve the function of forming scar tissue, cut healing time and reduce the possibility of injury recurrence.

Gentle stretching can be begun once all swelling has subsided. Try to work the entire range of motion of the injured joint or muscle, but be extremely careful not to force a stretch, or you risk re-injury to the area. Keep in mind that a stretch should never cause pain.

Heat may be helpful once the injury moves out of the acute phase and swelling and bleeding has stopped. Moist heat will increase blood supply to the damaged area and promote healing.

Finally, after the injury has healed, strengthening exercises can be begun. Start with easy weights and use good form

I am 22 weeks pregnant with severe neck pain?

Question by Nicole C: I am 22 weeks pregnant with severe neck pain?
Last Saturday night I slept very uncomfortably trying to get all my pillows just right. Ever since then I have had incredible neck pain. It hurts everytime I move my neck around. It is even worse at night while I try and sleep my neck stiffens up and when I go to turn my neck kills and it makes me want to cry. I am not sure if this is pregnancy related or if I just have torn a ligament in my neck and need to wait it out. Anyone have this problem?

Best answer:

Answer by Kitty
i only have normal neck pain here and there that goes away usually after i change positions, so i do not think this is pregnancy related. you may want to call your doctor and see if there is a medicine you can take, if tylenol isn’t helping, if nothing else he may have another solution for your neck pain other than medicine.

Get Rid of Neck Pain with an Orthopedic Pillow

Article by Dan Delaney

It’s quite common for people to wake up with a stiff and painful neck from time to time. But, if neck pain has become a daily companion, then it may be time for you to switch to a new pillow. That’s right: your neck problems are likely to be caused by the wrong pillow. In this case, choosing the right pillow is, of course, the best solution to your problem.

To determine whether your pillow is in need of replacement, ask yourself these questions: Do your pillows look stiff and flat? Do you need to pound your pillows into shape in order to get comfortable at night? Is your sleep interrupted during the night with the need to repeatedly “fluff” your pillow into shape? Do you wake up every morning with a stiff neck and shoulder pain? Do you constantly wake up with a slight headache? Is your pillow so old that you can’t even remember when and where you bought it?

If you answered YES to any of these questions, then your pillows is definitely in need of replacement! After all, the first step towards eliminating neck pain is providing adequate support to your shoulders and neck during sleep. That is also one of the most effective ways for you to get a good night’s sleep. Orthopedic pillows may be your best bet for this purpose.

When we say you need to replace your old pillow, we don’t just mean that you have to go to a department store and buy a brand-new standard pillow. That probably won’t solve your neck pain problems. For more lasting relief from shoulder and neck pain, you will need an orthopedic pillow. This pillow is especially designed to provide the necessary support for your shoulders and neck. You’ll also sleep better as a result. There is a wide variety of orthopedic pillows available in the market. You’ll have to be sure that the one you choose provides ample support to your neck, effectively cushions your head, and helps you maintain the right posture even in sleep.

The most popular type of orthopedic pillow is the one with raised and rounded edges. Its best feature is the special contour that conforms to the natural curve of your neck. This contour helps ensure that neck pain is alleviated and adequate support is provided. Orthopedic pillows are made from a variety of different materials, including memory foam, buckwheat hulls, water, and air. You may need to try orthopedic pillows made from different materials to find the one that suits you best.

Here’s an important tip: You may need some time adjusting to your new orthopedic pillow. That said, you may feel the need to switch to your old pillow for a few hours during the first few nights of using an orthopedic pillow. As soon as you get used to your orthopedic pillow and are able to finally get a more restful sleep with it, you can say goodbye to your old pillow for good. And while you’re at it, you can definitely say goodbye to neck pain as well.

For past 3 weeks painful right side neck. Now pain on right and left and down through shoulders. No relief from sleep or neck exercises and cold packs.

Go see your doctor. He can run tests to diagnose the cause of the pain and then make appropriate recommendations. He can prescribe pain meds and/or muscle relaxers if needed. Also, he may recommend physical therapy, chiropractic care, or massage therapy as options to improve your condition.

The type of pain you have will dictate treatment. Is is a muscle spasm? You may want to try hot pack. Is it sharp, shooting pain? Stick with the ice. Is there numbnesss or tingling involved? This may be due to a nerve problem.

What time of day is your pain worst? In the AM would indicate chemical changes in your body (arthritis, inflammation). In the PM would indicate your pain is mechanical in nature – meaning your posture or body mechanics (think office ergonomics!) could be the problem.

Question by jbwhite322@sbcglobal.net: can general anesthetic cause headaches and neck pain 2 weeks after surgery?

Best answer:

Answer by bubbles
depends on the kind of surgery. when I had back surgery the first time, i couldn’t figure out why my ribs hurt. turns out that during surgery i was laid on my stomach after put to sleep and an inflatable thing was filled with air to make my back straight. That presses funny on my ribs and I had actually black and blue corner shapes on me! Also, if you are sleeping funny due to post surgery pain, you could be causing it yourself. Gentle stretches, massage in pain area and ask the doctor if it gets worse instead of better.

Neck pain, eye pain, headache, fever, back pain?

Question by : Neck pain, eye pain, headache, fever, back pain?
I woke up 2 nights ago around 4 am with a fever and some back stiffness. Could not return to sleep and as the day progressed I started getting pain in my eyes when I move them or use the muscles in them. I also developed a headache that only hurts when I shake my head. My fever varies from 101 to 102 with a max of 103.6 a few hours ago. I also have neck pain, not to the touch but if I move my neck the back of my neck hurts. The back pain and stiffness has progressively gotten worse today. I can touch my chin to my neck so I don’t think it’s meningitis but if anyone could help me out or has had these same symptoms before that would be a great help.
